Does Kinesio Tape improve jump performance?
The use of kinesio tape (KT) to decrease pain and improve function is now widely used in clinical practice yet the evidence to support it's use is controversial. There have been conflicting findings regarding the effects of KT on muscle strength and jumping performance.
The current study examined the effects of KT on jump performance in elite female track and field athletes. 18 healthy, elite female track and field athletes participated. They performed a double 1-legged jump test into a pit with and without KT. The KT was applied in the commonly accepted technique with the muscles on stretch to the calves, hamstrings, quads and hip flexors and one leg only. The leg was selected randomly and the opposite leg was used as the control.
The authors found no significant difference between the groups. KT is unlikely to increase single leg jump performance in elite female athletes.
