The Alternative Limb Project

After writing about the Exo-Prosthetic some time ago, I started searching and following all kind of projects with prosthetics. There are many projects and fantastic initiatives to be found, but in terms of art & design, the AltLimbPro must be my favourite.

Artist and project initiator Sophie De Oliveira Barata seeks to create unique and personalized prosthetic limbs for amputees. With the Alternative Limb Project she applies an artistic approach to prosthetic limb design. Not that surprising, seen her degree in Special Effects Prosthetics for film and television, and 8 years of work as a sculptor for prosthetic providers creating realistic limbs.

The Alternative Limb Project was born in 2011, after Sophie De Oliveira Barata was inspired by a 7 year old amputee. The girl, Polyanna, came to Sophie for a new realistic limb every year, but started to make requests for something more fun and different.

One of the other AltLimbPro major influences was Viktoria Modesta (singer/ songwriter and model). She stated about one of her AltLimbPro limbs: “The first time I wore a limb that was so obviously bionic, it gave me a total sense of uniqueness and feeling mutant human in the best way possible.

In the video below, Sophie De Oliveira Barata talks about some of her work and projects during TEDxBrixton:
